"Id like to start you on a glimpse of my story, but I want you to understand that I do not feel comfortable telling it. Nor do I feel comfortable posting photos of amazing postures that I can do. The story will give you an idea of what to expect from me-the photos will not. The yogic path is not postures alone."
Nanci's distrust in an institutionalized education started early in her life. Can you imagine being autodidactic in a society who believes in indoctrination? It is a struggle, yet a warrior's path is always a struggle. Around the age of 15 Nanci 'woke up' to the bias, lies and deceit of the public school system and went straight into University in southern Oregon to study Anthropology & Psychology. Because she was SOU's youngest student (in their history), she was allowed to be autodiadactic under the strict supervision of her teachers, yet wasn't allowed to accumulate 'credits'. She continued her studies at Portland State University where she received honors of completion-equivalent to a masters degree. While Nanci studied in Portland, she found a love for dance and apparel design in which she took on, on top of her regular classes at PSU. When Nanci got older the desire for knowledge intensified. Dance, creating costumes and studying North American herbology, and Mayan language and mythology was a heart felt passion, but there was this pull. A magnetic force to the spirit. With a $100 in her pocket and a one way ticket, Nanci jumped off into the unknown. She landed in Kerala in search of a female teacher that she had heard of through a friend of a friend. Nanci did end up finding Mata Ji and lived with her as a student for close to a year. Mata Ji's taught through the Gurukula system; the ancient way of passing education/knowledge from teacher to student. This method of teaching was how yoga was installed into the student before the modern yoga we know today. The student must live with the teacher so the teacher can guide them on an ethical path to enlightenment. Mata Ji started Nanci's yoga education with Sanskrit. Everyday from 3am to when Mata Ji felt that Nanci needed sleep, Nanci learned how to read, write and understand the deep meaning of this spiritual language. Meditation and asana were required 2 twice per day plus reading scriptures, rewriting sanskrit texts, chanting and hard physical labor. It was one of the hardest yet most rewarding experience. With Mata Ji's teaching fresh in Nanci's mind, Nanci went into isolation for a year for her Sadhana practice. The time Nanci spent alone, she continued her daily routine Mata Ji gave her, forever imprinting the ethics of a master teacher. After Nanci came out of isolation she began to visit private family collected libraries of Kerela and Karnataka. Where books were still written on wood 'sticks' . She discovered ancient knowledge, including quantum physics. Some of the texts she read were hand copied through 200+ generations of Yoga Scholars. By the beginning of this century, Nanci had been scouted by one of the biggest yoga companies in the world. She had the opportunity to learn western bio mechanics, Ayurveda and physical therapy with teachers like Duncan Wong (who was Madonna's personal trainer), Sharon Gannon, David Life, Louisa Sears and Rachel Hull. Teachers who are trying their best to live the ethics in this technological time. Nanci's authentic start all came together when paired with these great teachers. Hopes of reversing arthritis, healing emotions and fixing body parts all came together in Shanghai. Nanci climbed to the top as a great leader. She opened 2 boutique studios in Xi'an and Hang Zhou and created the yoga dance team for this large yoga company.
More of the epic story will emerge soon...stay tuned!
